Loading Web pages onto your Virtual Domain

  1. Your need to use an FTP client. For Windows and Macintosh, you can check TuCows. You'll need the following things when setting up a connection with your virtual server.

    • hostname: www.yourdomain.com
    • user id: your_login_user_name
    • password: your_password

  2. Your HTML documents need to go into the directory called docroot. If you are using an FTP program when you first log on you will be taken to your home directory. The directory docroot will be immediately below your login directory.

  3. Transfer to remote system: html files as ascii (text), graphics (.gif, .jpg) as binary, and cgi (perl, php3, php4) files as ascii (text) into your cgi-bin directory (permissions will need to be set to be executable for CGI files - click here for more information). On MacOS, when you upload binary files, upload them as "Raw Data". Text files should be uploaded as "text".

Make sure the files are world readable, or they will not be visible via the web. To make files world readable, use the site chmod command in your ftp client. An example:

    ftp> site chmod 644 index.html

  4. The name for the startup home page should be one of the following:
    • index.html
    • index.htm
    • index.shtml
    • index.sht

  5. Access your home page at http://www.your_domain_name.com/ through a web browser like Netscape, Internet Explorer, or Opera.
