Everything You Wanted to Know about Air Bags

When my brother read this title--"Everything You Wanted to Know about Air Bags..."--he immediately said that I (Tommy) was the most qualified to discuss it. Then Dougie explained to him that it was about the air bags in your car, so Raymie changed his mind.

All kidding aside, this really is a serious issue. After all, everyone's read that air bags save lives and that air bags kill people--kind of contradictory, no? Confusing, even. So, we went to all the experts and put together this summary of how air bags work, how safe they are (really), how dangerous they are (really), what's with the pedal extenders and all sorts of other questions.

We sorted through all the info that's available and compiled it here. Some of it was actually hiding out in various nooks and crannies right here on our Web site, and some of it is hot off the presses.

If you still have more questions, feel free to contact...somebody else. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are two good, unbiased resources we happen to like.

Right now, if you'll excuse us, we've got to go pry Berman's cranium out of that Omni headrest, now that our Dewey, Cheetham & Howe proprietary air bag inflation tests are officially concluded.

Hoping your air bags never have to inflate,

Tom and Ray

Are you wondering...

  • ...who's actually getting hurt by air bags?

  • ...if it makes sense to get an on/off switch?

  • ...about changes that are making air bags safer?

  • ...what the feds have to say about air bags and infants, children and short drivers?

  • ...if you should try out some pedal extenders?

    Still want more information?

You can search the Car Talk Columns, where we've answered a veritable plethora of air bag questions over the years.

Our pals at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also have lots of useful air bag info.

Our tax dollars have actually been doing something over at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, where you can check out their thorough air bag area.

Okay, I want to read about those other air bags. Take me to Tom and Ray's bio.
