In Memory - Callie

Callie looking up

Everywhere you look,
there's a cat!
And that cat
is looking back at you
with innocence in her eyes
and a tiger in her heart!

Callie For many years Callie was the senior member of the Lake Big Fish cat pack. She was a tortishell, and like all torties, she had attitude oozing from every hair. And she was very vocal, too. Although Callie didn't have the crying baby voice of a Siamese, she had an ear-splitting yowl suitable for a cat ten times her size. And she was not afraid to use it.

Callie was an evil genius. If there was a way to get someone else in trouble, especially one of the dogs, Callie would figure it out. She liked to pick on the other cats when they ignored her (Callie hated to be ignored). One day I saw her watching Oliver and Tigger engage in a mock battle. She walked quite casually up to them and reached out a paw and poked Oliver in the butt. Oliver jumped straight up in the air and came down flicking his head from side to side, looking for whoever had attacked him from the rear. And Callie just sat there cleaning her claws. "What? No, I didn't see anything. It must have been Casper."

The backyard was Callie's private hunting domain, although she did share mouse-catching responsibilities with Murphy the Silly Dog and Oliver Wendal "Rambo" Cat. Callie liked to bring her trophies in the house. It wasn't so bad when it was a mouse part. I could deal with that. But I did not like it when she brought live mice in to play with, and then let them get away when they didn't run any more. And of course, no self respecting cat will touch a dead mouse, so I had to find the bodies and dispose of them. If I was lucky they would die someplace where I can find them.

Like all cats, Callie took a lot of pride in her appearance. The china cabinet in the dining room was just purrfect for when she wanted to check out her good looks. Or her bad looks (one has to practice those evil and nasty expressions, don't ya know?).

The years passed, and Callie grew older. She developed health problems, including diabetes. Callie did not like getting insulin shots. She did not like receiving intravenous fluids. She didn't want to eat. Callie was ready to join her friends, especially Nikki her favorite dog. And so, one beautiful autumn day, Callie put her paws on the Rainbow bridge and dashed across to join her family.

We are reduced in number, but not diminished in love.
