To: CIA Action Team Omicron
From: Regional Director Edward W. Falkenberg

As you may be aware, the International Atomic Power conference is being held in Dallas, Texas this year. One of the attendees is the Russian physicist Igor Platov. Dr. Platov has announced that he is planning to present a new mechanism he has developed for rendering nuclear waste harmlessly inert. Naturally, this has excited a great deal of interest in the nuclear energy community, and attendance at the conference is expected to be at a record high.

Dr. Platov has contact the Agency regarding the possibility of defection. He explains that Russia's current financial crisis prevents him from having the funding to pursue his research, but his requests to emmigrate have been denied. He also insists on having his wife, Irina, join him in America. Your team is instructed to pick up both. Platov and his wife and transport them to safety. Bear in mind that we require Platov's willing cooperation if he is to be of any use. Try to be accommodating to his needs.

As always, complications have set in. Mrs. Platov disappeared from Russia seventy-two hours ago. Dr. Platov informed us that we could pick her up in Dallas at Pier One in the Valley View Mall. She is supposed to arrive at 1015 hours. We are unsure how she is planning to reach the United States, but we suspect the involvement of the international smuggling consortium known as the Syndicate. Russian security forces have noted her absence from the University compound. Immediate orders were telexed to Platov's escort to tighten their surveillance of him. Platov has now disappeared from sight.

Intercepted embassy communications reveal that Platov is not in the custody of Russian security forces. Both he and his nuclear "cleaner" are missing. Since his departure invalidates the original rendezvous, we can only wait and hope he contacts us. In the meantime, your team should make the original meet with Irina Platov and hope she appears. If so, treat her courteously and try to ascertain how to contact her husband. If she is willing, take her into protective custody.

Be warned, we know that Platov's "escorts" are actually KGB operatives. They will probably be attempting to prevent the defection. Take whatever measures you deem appropriate. We have included an intercepted video image of one of their operatives.

You are also ordered to appear at the Prestonwood Food Court at 1130 hours to meet with representatives from the Azerbaijani Military Intelligence. They have information they wish to sell, and you will evaluate it, and purchase it if it is deemed worthwhile. Your leader has been given adequate funds to this end.

ROLEPLAYING NOTES
Ok, you're with the CIA - a legitimate U.S. government agency. Yes, you sometimes have to do shady stuff, but in the end you're still with the white hats. You do what's necessary, but you aren't a pack of ruthless killers. Also, remember that the CIA charter says you're not supposed to be operating domestically. You're technically allied with the FBI, the local cops, etc., but you're not supposed to be there. Try to keep a low profile to avoid any "incidents" that the media or opposition Congress members might latch onto.

OUT OF CHARACTER
Rumors have been circulating around your division that a mole has infiltrated it. It is unknown who the mole represents, much less who the mole is. Sources have indicated that the information that the Azerbaijani agents wish to sell is, in fact, the identity of the mole.
